Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the option to contest certain decisions made by the chair umpire, echoing the system currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move arrives only a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can request the official to review other situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can request.

Case in Point

An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined the player was responsible for interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at all of its events.

Further Updates

Another innovation at The Championships this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
