Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for several hours when numerous of them entered the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and near the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons containing numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and participants so that these practices become unprofitable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in nearby states have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
